Senate Appropriations Committee Stops AB 2569

The Senate Appropriations Committee stopped Assembly Bill (AB) 2569 which would have reduced the number of registrants who are not listed on the Megan’s Law website. The bill, which was authored by Assembly Member Melissa Melendez, was previously passed by the full Assembly.

“AB 2569 was stopped by the efforts of registrants, family members and supporters who wrote letters, made phone calls and testified,” stated ACSOL President Janice Bellucci. “The halting of this bill before it could be considered on the Senate floor is a significant victory.”

The initial bill was introduced in the Assembly on February 19 and its scope was so broad that it would have added thousands of registrants to the Megan’s Law website. The bill was modified slightly and passed by the full Assembly on June 1. The bill was then sent to the Senate where it was modified again and passed by the Senate Public Safety Committee by a narrow margin after Committee Chairwoman Loni Hancock expressed significant reservations about the bill. After passage by the Public Safety Committee, AB 2569 was considered by the Senate Appropriations Committee which stopped further consideration of the bill in the Senate by sending it to the committee’s suspense file.

Once again everyone’s efforts paid off. I’m so happy for those it would have effected. We may have to fight this battle another day, but as time goes on, we get stronger and better at fighting.

What is wrong with this woman?

What were the reasons given for canning the bill? Just curious, I couldn’t make it to this hearing. I’m glad this senseless bill was stopped, although I think it would have slipped through if registered people hadn’t put the effort in to challenge it.

Congratulations on yet another victory.

There was a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes (thanks guys)… every effort put forward by all of you is heroic and does with every small step and big leap (as it happens) makes a difference! Janice and staff needs us all to Show up, Stand up and Speak up in any way we can. Whether by a post to an article, making a donation of any amount, holding a sign or even just cheering us on with words of encouragement.

Janice, without you leading the charge we couldn’t have done it!

I looked at the votes by the senate appropriations committee and all the members voted yes and it passed yet it was sent to the suspense file? Not to sound confused ,,,,,but how can it pass via vote then be suspended?

Janice well done! you are incredible -thank you 🙂

Good job.

This is pointing out the obvious, but this is a battle of attrition. They only hope to wear us down and pass everything after we’re all exhausted. Adding new people to our ranks gives us more fresh vigor to continue the fight.
